Franz Schubert's String Quinter in C major, which was the composer's final instrumental work before his death at age 31. Given the timing of completion, one wonders if Schubert sensed he might not live to hear the work publicly performed.
When Schubert submitted it to his publisher, along with three piano sonatas, his tone was deferential. Please let me know, he wrote, if "any of these works commend themselves to you." Sadly, the Quintet in C major did not. His publisher responded only with requests for more of the Lieder and piano music, which are the works that made Schubert famous.
For this performance, Maestro Thomas Crawford will give a stirring introduction to the work. Then, leading member of the American Classical Orchestra will perform Schubert's String Quintet in C major, using the period instruments that would have been played during Schubert's own lifetime."
