History of the 7’s

If you’ve ever wondered about the history of the 7s then here is a brief explanation.

In 1885, Tynedale Rugby Football Club had the impertinence to cross the border and win the first ever Sevens tournament they entered at Hawick. Just a few weeks later, they backed it up by winning the Galashiels Title, the second oldest 7s in the world.

The very next season, the club crossed the border again and promptly took the big one, the prestigious Ladies Trophy at Melrose in 1886. Tynedale then remained the only non-Scottish Winners at Melrose for nearly 70 years. In 1894 TRFC became the first club outside of Scotland to host a Seven-a-Side tournament and is therefore the original English 7s venue.

This event was celebrated 100 years later at Tynedale Park, this very venue, with entrants competing from across the World. Manly from Australia and TRFC beat Villager from South Africa to take home the trophy. With Sevens now stretching far beyond its Borders birthplace, be part of it as we continue the tradition, right where it all started in England 129 years ago.
