What you need to know

The forthcoming Protect Duty will impose a statutory responsibility on Publicly Accessible Locations to implement certain protective security measures.  Although it is not yet clear precisely what this Duty will entail, the kinds of vulnerabilities it is designed to address can already be identified.  A second pressing issue in counter-terrorism today concerns Prevent, specifically the value and challenges of designing training that develops an understanding of how to identify someone who is being radicalised, or is vulnerable to being radicalised, in employees who have no background in counter-terrorism.  In covering these issues this presentation will also cover where Protect and Prevent fit within Contest, the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy, and therefore the role they play in countering terrorism.

This presentation will be delivered by Dr Samantha Newbery, an academic specialising in counter-terrorism and intelligence.  Her many publications include the book Interrogation, Intelligence and Security, and she has taught security professionals on Distance Learning Masters programmes for more than ten years.
