What you need to know

Gloucestershire is rich in railway heritage and history – from the early plateways and tramways, to country branch lines, dock railways, quarries lines and the main line railways.  In the past there were numerous companies that built and operated railways across the county, including two of the largest, the Great Western Railway and the Midland Railway – whose meeting at Gloucester created the notorious ‘Break in gauge’.   The zenith of the rail network in the county was around 1920 and after the nation’s railways were grouped into the ‘Big Four’ in 1924, Gloucestershire fell firmly within the realm of the Great Western Railway.  Sadly, after the World Wars (during which local railway firms contributed much), the Beeching axe fell, and the network condensed.  Thankfully however, many records have found their way into the county archives and this presentation will reveal a glimpse of this much loved and celebrated past.

Where to find us

 

Find us by the Abbey in a beautifully restored row of timber framed buildings. The Old Baptist Chapel is located opposite the museum, along a little medieval alleyway.

Car: Take Junction 9 off the M5 and follow the signs to Tewkesbury Abbey.

There are numerous car parks nearby. You may also want to consider a car share.

Rail: The nearest railway station is Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. There is a bus stop a short walk away for the 42 bus will bring you into Tewkesbury.

Bus: As well as the bus that serves the railway station, there is also a regular service from Cheltenham (41) which stops in the Crescent which is almost next to the museum. There is also a bus service from Gloucester (71) which stops in the town centre, which is a short walk away.

Bike: If you cycle to the museum you may leave your bike in our courtyard garden.

Walk: If you are staying in Tewkesbury you’ll find most hotels and B&Bs are a short walk away from the museum which is centrally located in Church Street.
