Greek Folk music - Urban and Rural Folk from the Near East

What you need to know

This project brings together folk music from many corners of Greece and the near surrounding areas of the Mediterranean basin. Music that mirrors the natural elements in its environment – from the echoes of the mountains, the singing of the birds, the sound of the waves, and the rhythms of rural and metropolitan life.

Balkan and mediterranean sound is a collective expression of happiness and despair, songs written for the recollection of epic stories, mundane moments, life, love and death. Rhythms that correspond to dances – communal circle dances of the villages, or the more urban and coy tsifteteli and karsilamas dances.

Much of it is authorless and enjoyed either in solitude or in intimate and grand festivities. With oud, violin, guitar and voice…let the music take you on a journey from the mountains of the Balkan north to mainland Greece, through the islands of the Aegean and across to Asia Minor!

Glykeria Kissa, Vocals
Ismini Mouzakiti, Violin
